Shawn Simmons didn’t know she loved animals until much later in her life. She never had one until she bought a house that appeared to have a stray Siamese cat living in the backyard. The cat wasn’t just stray, however; it was a feral cat. The cat would have a litter of kittens almost all the time, and Shawn was finding it impossible to do anything with the kittens. She was constantly looking for homes for them, so she began to do research to figure out how to get this cat to stop leaving kittens in her yard.
When she learned that many organizations take part in something called the TNR project – trap, neuter, spay – she decided she would do something about it. Now she has the Kitty Bungalow. What she does here is simple. She works with feral cats to ensure that they are properly socialize to become house cats that love their people and their homes. It is not easy to turn a feral cat into a cat that loves humans, so she also has a way of keeping feral cats that cannot adjust to living with humans in a controlled environment so that they are free to roam without humans but also in a safe and loving environment that keeps them free and happy.
She works very hard with kittens when they are young so that they learn to be loving toward people rather than turn to their feral ways. Her organization might not be old, but it’s saved hundreds of cats and it does make a big difference.
