Has your family decided that they are ready to adopt a pet? Since there are so many choices, how do you know which pet is right for you? If your family is looking for a loving cat with a dog-like personality, you should definitely consider the Maine Coon cat or Maine Coon mix. The largest domesticated breed of cat, the Maine Coon cat is known for its distinguishing physical characteristics and affectionate nature. Being one of the top cat breeds for families, it’s no surprise that the Maine Coon cat is becoming increasingly popular; however there are tons of them in need of rescuing from shelters.

Recently spotlighted as a Shelter Me winner on ABC Action News in Philadelphia was Only Maine Coons Rescue!, a non-profit organization that focuses specifically on Maine Coon and Maine Coon mix rescues. Since being founded in 2012, Christine Staahl and other volunteers have overseen over 50 Maine Coon rescues. What is so unique about this organization is that the rescue cats are placed in foster homes, instead of a scary shelter, while they search for “furrever” homes for them. These foster homes allow the cats to feel loved and comfortable, and you can really see their personalities shine through for the camera. Staahl is currently looking for more families who are going to love the cats like they do and provide them with a forever home. Featured on the video are 6 precious cats ready to be adopted. First there is Mattie, a beautiful black and white cat that is five years old and loves to lay with her human. Then the adorable kitten pair Dave & Buster. They are seven weeks old and are looking for a home together. Buster only has 3 legs, but that doesn’t stop him from playfully running and chasing his brother. Bree is a short haired cat with plenty of those wonderful Maine Coon personality traits. Diabolo is a big boy, weighing in at a whopping 18 pounds! He loves to spend time lying in bed snuggling with his human. Last is King, saved from New York City after being thrown out of the window of a high rise building. When he was rescued he had a lot of broken bones, but has been nursed back to help and is looking for someone to share the rest of his life with in a new home.

By participating in a Maine Coon cat rescue, you will feel great about making a difference in the life of an animal. You can start by going visiting the Only Maine Coons Rescue! website www.omcrescue.org to search for available cats in need of adoption. There you will see all of the adorable cats featured in the ABC Action News Spotlight video, and a few other just as delightful Coonies ready to become the newest furry addition to your family.
