While animals are praised for characteristics like loyalty, intuition, and affection, perhaps one of their most impressive traits is resourcefulness. Just like humans, animals are able to adapt to survive, learning to cope with difficult situations or conditions. Animals like cats can be very inspiring when they overcome massive obstacles to live a happy and safe life. One such cat is a tortoiseshell cat named Frankie who lives in Cork, Ireland.

Frankie has overcome several nearly insurmountable issues in her life. For starters, Frankie grew up a street cat, lacking the care and attention of a loving family. It seems quite likely that her mother was a feral street cat as well. As such, Frankie was severely malnourished and in dire straits. However, she managed to endure this difficult upbringing and eventually find her way into a loving home.

Even more difficult than the fact that Frankie grew up on the streets, however, were the health conditions that have left her blind. Early in her life, it appears that she contracted a severe case of cat flu. This horrible ailment effectively sealed her eyelids shut and covered them in goo. Further, her actual eyes had deteriorated and turned to goo as well. This left Frankie blinded and frail, as well as being malnourished.

Despite such conditions, Frankie survived. While a great deal of the credit is owed to her resilience and spirit, she was also quite lucky. Completely accidentally, Frankie wandered one day into Beata Jezek’s yarn business. Jezek immediately took the blind kitten in and brought her to a vet. The vet initially believed that cleaning the gunk off Frankie’s eyelids and giving her medication would allow her to see, as he was unaware of how badly her eyes had deteriorated.

Jezek followed the vet’s orders, but brought the cat back in when her vision was not returning. At this follow-up, the vet realized that Frankie had no functioning eyes. After removing the goo that had once been an eye, Frankie’s eyelid was sewn shut and she returned home with Jezek.

Having lived without vision for most of her life, Frankie was quick to adapt to her new setting. Although she occasionally bumps into furniture, she mapped out her house very well. In addition, she has found it very enjoyable to sit in the garden and listen to the sounds of nature. Another hobby that Frankie has picked up is hunting for flies.

With a bit of luck, Frankie was saved from the terrible conditions that she was forced to endure from a young age. She is a fantastic example of how resourceful and adaptive cats can be, learning to thrive in a new home after being treated for her poor health. It is quite inspiring to see animals find ways to live happy lives even after enduring such horrible situations. Stories like Frankie’s are also a great reminder that all cats deserve a loving home. Even diseased, hungry street cats can be loving and affectionate if given the proper care. One day, hopefully all animals will be able to learn how to navigate a home that is filled with love instead of merely learning how to survive.
