Cats that are fluffy in more ways than one are often adorable to many of us – after all, the better to cuddle with! However, while we love our cat’s fluff, there is a difference between fluffy and dangerously unhealthy. A cat at an animal shelter in the U.K. is the fattest cat that the shelter has ever seen, and it might not be farfetched to say that it just might be one of the fattest in the world. The feline, named Texas, has actually been put on a special emergency diet after it was found to be a whopping 26 pounds.
Texas, named after the largest state in the United States, was brought to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home after his owner passed away. He is currently on a strict diet in order to help the kitty shed the pounds that make him morbidly obese. With the holidays coming, many people often think about dropping some pounds prior to Christmas, but for Texas it’s a serious health condition and losing weight isn’t just an option – it’s a necessity. Battersea takes in a number of animals yearly, with 3,000 of them being cats, so they’ve seen all types and shapes and sizes of felines. However, Texas is by far the biggest – hence his name – and while it may come as a shock to see just how big he is, it’s no laughing matter.
“Some people might think it’s funny to see a cat this big, but it is in fact extremely sad to see an animal which is suffering so badly,” said SuiLi Weight, Battersea’s cattery team leader.
“Overfeeding your cat is a form of cruelty, you may think you are showing it love by giving it treats and feeding it human foods, but it’s in fact an incredibly cruel thing to do in the long run,” she adds.
