It’s a very sad day for the cat world: beloved Internet kitty Colonel Meow has died. His death incited a very public mourning among his legions of fans (known as his ‘Minions’) on the World Wide Web after Meow’s owner, Anne Marie Avery, posted a Facebook update Thursday announcing the passing of her cat.
“Colonel Meow passed away yesterday evening,” she wrote. “I will post more about the details when I’ve had a few days to grieve. Thank you so much for your understanding, Minions. Your love and support has meant the world to us both. -Slave Beast”
The furry feline was adopted in Seattle in October 2011 and was later transplanted to Los Angeles. He suffered some health problems in November after a risky operation and blood transfusion. In August 2012, Avery created a Facebook page for Colonel Meow for fun, with no idea on the Internet sensation he was to become. Meow’s Facebook garnered a whopping 350,000 likes – he even snagged the Guinness World Records title, Longest Fur on a Cat, that same year!
Aside from being a phenom in his own right, Colonel Meow was also BFFs with fellow celeb cats Lil Bub and Grumpy Cat.
