Can Cats Eat Cake?

Cakes

The exact line of separation between cakes and breads can be rather blurry. For proof, look no further than banana bread, which is at least as much of a cake as it is a bread. Still, most cakes can be distinguished from most breads with relative ease, so this isn’t as much of an issue as it could be. Cakes have been around since ancient times. However, earlier cakes could be quite different from the iconic cake of modern times. To name an example, placenta cake can trace its roots to ancient Greek and ancient Roman cuisine. In fact, the placenta cake isn’t named for the placenta. Instead, the placenta was named for the placenta cake, which in turn, was named for how flat it was. The iconic cake is very much a creation of more recent centuries. Having said this, the important point is that people enjoy a wide range of cakes made using a wide range of ingredients. Something that makes it more difficult to say whether a cat can eat cake or not.

Can Cats Eat Cake?

There isn’t a single answer to the question of whether a cat can eat cake or not, which makes sense because there isn’t a single kind of cake. Generally speaking, cats shouldn’t be eating a lot of cake because most cakes are unhealthy for them. However, most cakes shouldn’t be outright poisonous for them either. Be warned that there are some cakes that are outright poisonous for cats. For instance, every single chocolate cake should be considered off-limits for cats because chocolate contains substances that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, tremors, hyperactivity, and so much worse.

What Do You Need to Keep in Mind If You Are Thinking About Feeding Cake to Your Cat?

Here are some things that interested individuals should keep in mind if they are thinking about feeding cake to their cat:

Consult a Veterinarian

For starters, a cat owner should consult their veterinarian if they are thinking about feeding their cat something new. There is no way to predict what will happen with 100 percent accuracy. However, their veterinarian should be able to provide them with the best predictions because of a couple of factors. One, veterinarians are supposed to have specialized expertise and experience on what cats can and can’t eat. Two, their veterinarian should have up-to-date knowledge of their cat’s general condition, which can have a huge impact on what their cat can and can’t eat. Besides this, veterinarians are also an excellent source of information on how much of a new food a cat can eat. This is very important because something that is fine when consumed in small quantities might not be so fine when consumed in not so small quantities. Moreover, how much of a new food a cat can eat can see a fair amount of variation from cat to cat.

Always Feed in Moderation

A cat owner should always feed their cat a new food in moderation. By default, their cat should already be getting all of the nutrients that they need from their regular diet, so that shouldn’t be an issue. Instead, cat owners should be much more concerned about the potential for their cat to have a bad reaction to what they eat. It is possible for cats to be allergic to various things that can be found in cakes. However, it should also be noted that there are various things in cakes that are bad for cats when eaten in excess, which should be avoided because gastrointestinal distress won’t be fun for either cats or cat owners. On top of these things, interested individuals should remember that they are much bigger than their cats, meaning that what seems like a small amount of food for them might not be so small for their feline companions.

Some Cakes Contain Ingredients That Are Poisonous For Cats

Chocolate is an excellent example of a common cake ingredient that is outright poisonous for cats. Unfortunately, it is far from being alone. Any cake that contains alcohol should be avoided because cats are very sensitive to the stuff. Common symptoms of a cat consuming alcohol include but are not limited to nausea, increased urination, uncontrolled urination, suppressed reflexes, and a slower heartbeat than normal. If a cat owner believes that their cat has consumed alcohol, they should seek out either their veterinarian or some other source of emergency veterinary assistance. Similarly, any cake that contains coffee should be avoided as well. This is because coffee contains some of the same stimulants that make chocolate poisonous to cats. Thanks to those, consuming coffee can cause cats to experience nausea, seizures, irritability, a heartbeat that is faster than normal, and worse. Like cats consuming alcohol, cats consuming coffee is an emergency situation as well.

Even More Cakes Contain Ingredients That Can Be Problematic For Cats

Even more cakes contain ingredients that can be problematic for cats in one way or another. For example, cats are like most mammals in that they lose the ability to digest lactose as adults, meaning that they aren’t very good at digesting milk and milk-related products. This doesn’t mean that every single cat will start experiencing gastrointestinal distress when they eat something made using milk. However, the chances tend to rise when they eat more of something made using milk. Similarly, cats shouldn’t be eating a lot of fat and a lot of sugar. Eating these things increases their chances of becoming overweight in much the same way as humans, thus increasing their chances of getting a wide range of serious medical conditions. Sugar is particularly pointless for cats because they literally don’t have the taste buds needed to taste sweetness, meaning that they can’t even enjoy the taste of sweet but not particularly nutritious foods.

Consider Alternatives

Under the circumstances, interested individuals might want to look into alternatives that can make for better cat snacks. Both meat and fish tend to be decent options so long as they are cooked without any ingredients before being fed to cats in small quantities. The cooking kills harmful microorganisms; the lack of ingredients prevents the addition of anything harmful; and the feeding in moderation prevents causing any problems from eating too much of these foods. Similarly, cats have been known to snack on certain fruits and vegetables, though interested individuals should be careful to choose something that is safe before preparing it in a way that makes for safe consumption.
