A List of Foods that Are Poisonous to Cats

More and more people are becoming aware of what foods are poisonous t0 cats (and dogs). Because we love our cats so much, there lies a sense of guilt for not sharing what we are eating as our pet meows at us in desperation. ( I am a total sucker!) For as much as we aim to please their palate, “people food” can be more dangerous than “pleasing”. You may already know about the dangers some of these foods present to your cat, but some of these foods just may surprise you. Here are the foods you need to keep away from the kitty!

  1. Chocolate –Chocolate is becoming well-known as a food considered toxic to cats and dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine, the substance that makes chocolate a poison cats. Chocolate is often left on counter tops and tabletops, especially during the holidays. With Easter coming up be sure to keep chocolate in an area that your cat cannot get to. (During holidays and always!) Speaking of chocolate, any human food or candy (even if it isn’t chocolate) that is considered “sweet” should not be fed to your cat. There are plenty of cat treats available that you can give to them as you are enjoying your favorite sweet treat.
  2. Milk –Many people are under the impression that milk is to a cat– as a dog is to a bone. NOT true. Milk is not toxic to cats but some cats may be lactose intolerant. Though cats may love the taste of milk, if a cat is lactose intolerant this can cause gas, cramps, or a belly ache. If you have a cat who loves milk, substitute it with cream. Milk with a higher fat content has less lactose. Substituting cream in the place of milk twice a week should be okay.
  3. Onions and Garlic – Bad! Bad! Bad! Onions contain a substance that destroys red blood cells in cats which can lead to anemia. Cats need their red blood cells to stay healthy and the consumption of onions in cats should be avoided completely. Garlic contains a similar substance, but a lower amount of it. Add onions and garlic to the “bad” list.
  4. Tomatoes– This vegetable contains glycoalkaloid solanine, a poisonous alkaloid. If consumed by your cat, this can cause severe lower gastrointestinal problems.
  5. Raw Eggs –Brought eggs can contain salmonella. YUK! Raw eggs also contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of B vitamins.
  6. Raw Fish–Yes, cats are known to love fish but it should not be fed uncooked! Eating raw fish can result in a B vitamin deficiency that can lead to seizures, and worst-case scenario, death. There are plenty of cat foods and treats available that are fish flavored, and safe. No sushi for the cat! (Or any raw fish)
  7. Fish Bones – I don’t know anybody that freely gives their cat fish bones, but if you do–stop. Cats may get into the trash to seek out fish bones so be sure to discard them in an area that your cat cannot tear apart. The consumption of fish bones can lead to lacerations and/or an obstruction in the digestive system.
  8. Grapes– The Animal Poison Control Center states there are still many unknowns with the toxic potential of grapes and raisins. They advise not giving grapes or raisins to pets in any amount.
Keep in mind if you see one of these food items listed as an ingredient in cat foods or treats, do not be alarmed. Feeding your cat these oods straight from your table is not the same as what you find in cat foods and treats. If a y of these foods are listed as an ingredients in your cat’s food/treats it has been processed in a way that it is not toxic to your pet.
