10 Ways Your Cat Will Save You Money

Coming off the heels of spending $720 two days before Christmas to save the life of my idiot cat who attacked our freshly adopted pit bull less than 4 hours after we got the dog home and ended up being made into a holiday snack, it’s hard for me to figure out how it’s possible a cat can actually save you money. But that was probably my fault. Perhaps I should not have adopted a dog that gets along well with other animals except cats that try to eat their faces after jumping on them from the top of the fridge – my bad. Either way, after paying that much money to save the cat’s life, this is something I should learn more about; so I have. Now here are a few ways your cat can save you money.

They Keep us Busy

For some people who have cats, it’s impossible to spend more money than necessary because their cats keep them so busy. Those who really love their cats like kids would often rather stay home and play with the cats than they would go out and have a good time shopping or spending money. It’s not for everyone, but it does work for some.

It’s Hard to Shop Online

When a cat won’t get off your lap or out of your face, it’s sometimes difficult to do anything productive or useful. This means you won’t be able to shop online because your cat is not giving you the time that you need to buy the things that you want. When you cannot buy the things that you want because your cat is in the way, you will save more money.

They Force You to Save

Sometimes you just want more cats, and that means you have to save money to either buy the breed you want or just to take care of the ones you want to bring home. I mean, if your cat is hurt and you have to take him or her to the vet, you need savings for that stuff, right? You should save some money so that you can take care of your cats, and they’re going to make sure that you do just that.

They Keep You from Getting More Animals

If you have a cat, you might understand this. The cost of our cat’s health issues since getting attacked by the dog, and his clear inability to tolerate other animals, has made it impossible for us to ever consider another animal in this house. This means our cat just saved us a ton of money not allowing us to get other animals for his own safety and for our own sanity.

They Trick Some into Not Having Kids

I know a couple who does not have kids because they love their cats so much. I think the truth is that they’re just not ready for kids, but kids are expensive (I do have four of them, you know). However, they often say that they love their cats so much that they will never, ever have kids because they are terrified that they will never love their kids as much as they love their cats. And by I know a couple, I mean I know a woman who watches kids for a living and these are her words.

They Keep Some from Traveling

If you have a cat that needs caring and you can’t take the cat to the kitty hotel or to a family member while you travel, you probably just don’t travel, do you? It’s something that a lot of people forgo and it’s not that uncommon. Many people with animals make it their personal mission not to go anywhere since they don’t like the idea of their cat being left home alone or with people they aren’t sure they can trust.

They’re Happy with Cheap Foods

My cat is so happy to eat, he doesn’t care what he eats. He eats it all with the same excitement and happiness, and it’s not like he’s a cat that doesn’t get fed on a daily basis. He’s just happy to have food (he’d be 500 pounds if he fed himself) and he doesn’t need anything fancy on which to dine. For us, this means we get to feed the cat cheap food and call it a day. He doesn’t know the difference.

They Stay Inside

Cats stay inside, so you don’t have to go outside with them. This doesn’t exactly save you money, but it kind of does save you money. When they don’t go outside, they don’t become exposed to other things like fleas and ticks. This means you will save money on medication and on vet visits, which is a great reason to consider getting a cat instead of a dog. Your cat’s happiness to just be indoors is all it takes to save you a great deal of money, and that’s nice.

They Hate the Car

Cats hate the car, so you won’t want to take them anywhere. This means you’ll probably cancel a number of standard and routine vet appointments (note that this is not something that we condone or that you should do, it’s just something a lot of cat owners say about saving money). Because cats are so unhappy in the car, many people will rationalize not taking them to the vet for checkups or any other reason than an emergency just so they don’t have to deal with the stress of this situation. This will save you – probably in the short term – a lot on medical bills.

They Clean Themselves

Unless you have a very long-hair cat that sheds frequently, you really don’t have to do anything special for your cat. You don’t need to buy any special items or take the cat to the groomer, and that will save you a bundle. It’s something a lot of cat owners are happy about when they get a cat with short hair instead of one with long, beautiful hair that requires more grooming.
