One of the reasons that people routinely decide to get a cat for a pet is because they don’t feel like they have the time to dedicate to an animal that needs more attention, such as a dog. By their very nature, cats usually like to be on their own. They don’t need to be taken for a walk, nor do they need your help when it comes to doing their business, and for the most part, they don’t even like to have a lot of social interaction with people. A lot of cats have a tendency to do just fine when they’re left alone for long periods of time, provided that you give them a clean litter box and plenty of food and water. With that being said, there are certain breeds of cats that require even less attention than others. Below are five different breeds that you might consider low maintenance. 1. Norwegian Forest Cat
Technically, this particular breed of cat has a personality that is much more bold than most. While your cat might be a great comedian and is likely fearless, that doesn’t mean that it needs you to be there every second of the day. In fact, these cats make great pets for people that spend more time away from home than they spend living there. The cats are extremely independent and they don’t have a tendency to miss you the same way that a dog would. In fact, many owners of this particular breed of cat go away for several days at a time, being sure to leave plenty of food and water out for the cat and they do fine without any other assistance whatsoever.
2. Persian Cat
These cats are well known for their long, flowing coats. They’re beautiful, and there is no doubt about that. They’re also extremely independent. Although cats in general have a tendency to be independent, this particular breed seems to be more so than the average feline. While you’re home, they might associate with you or they might prefer to stay off by themselves. In either case, they don’t seem to have a problem when people go away for several hours at a time, or even for a few days. More often than not, you can find this breed of cat exploring its surroundings on its own or indulging in a long nap. As far as maintenance goes, the only thing you really need to do other than the obvious with food, water and a clean litter box is to brush its coat in order to make sure that it stays beautiful.
3. Maine Coon Cat
This cat is really quite unique. The first thing you’re likely to notice about the breed is how beautiful it is. It has a coat that flows, yet it isn’t as difficult to care for as the Persian cat. They also grow to be rather large. The thing that makes them truly unique is that they can be a great companion when you’re there, often choosing to cuddle up with you or spend time in your presence. At the same time, they’re perfectly fine when it comes to having the independence to spend time by themselves. Another thing that makes them stand out is that they are more likely to leave things alone as opposed to getting into trouble. If you live in an apartment or you have roommates, this might be the perfect pet because it’s not likely to cause any trouble with other people or their possessions.
4. British Shorthair Cat
Like the cat listed in the paragraph above, this one has a tendency to interact more with humans than a lot of other feline breeds. However, it doesn’t have a tendency to miss you or become upset when you’re not there. If you leave something for them to watch, such as providing access to a window, they’re likely to do just fine on their own, even if it’s for several hours at a time.
5. Russian Blue Cat
These cats are stunningly beautiful with their blue colored coats and green eyes. However, they don’t usually like being around people all that much. In fact, they may choose to ignore you even when you are home. As a breed, they simply prefer to be by themselves.
