10 Traits That Make Up a Great Cat Owner
Cat lovers come in all shapes and sizes, and it’s a good thing since all cats also come in all shapes and sizes. There is no one size fits all when it comes to cats – or their owners. My husband and I love both cats and dogs, and we have different personalities. It’s just one of those things that is not all that easy to explain or even understand. It simply is what it is when it comes to cat owners. What we love about cat owners, too, is that they are the kind of people that really do love their animals.
You cannot have a cat and not really love it. This is an animal that is going to ignore you, love you, want you and pretend you don’t exist. But it’s an animal that really does require a lot of love and affection from you. So read on to find out what traits make people good cat owners. Rest assured, however, that if you do not have all the traits on this list, you are not at all a bad person. You’re merely the kind of person that breaks from the norm. Here are some of the most common traits required to make a good cat owner.
Patience
Owning a cat requires a great deal of patience. I’ve owned one my entire life and I can say with certainty that this is probably the trait that is most required when a cat is present. They are wonderful creatures, without a doubt, but they are trying in a way that you simply do not have to understand unless you have one. Your cat will do everything it can to get its way and you have to be very patient in teaching it that it cannot rule the house.
Firmness
Cats do what they want, and it takes a bit of firmness and discipline to make them stop this. They are not looking to listen to you until they realize that they’ve exhausted all their options and there is nothing else available for them. What this means is that your cat might make it a habit to get on the counter and relax; and you have to make it a habit to make it get down. You have to be firm or your cat will walk all over you.
A dominant attitude
Cats want to be the boss, and you have to show them that they are now. If you fail to do this, you will end up with an animal that is running your house and it is not going to end well. You need a cat that will listen to you, which means finding a way to be the dominant personality.
Responsibility
No pet owner can own a pet, cat or dog or fish or turtle, without some sort of responsibility. You have to be able to care for your animal, you have to be able to ensure that your animal is taken care of, and you have to know that your animal is one of the most important people in your lives. Animals are living creatures, and they need someone responsible to care for them and ensure that they are kept healthy and alive.
A love of home
People who have cats need to love to be at home. Having an animal like this kind of ties you to home, since someone has to be there to care for the cat on a regular basis. If you are not home to care for your animal, who is going to do it for you? Remember, he cannot feed himself or get water on his own, and he certainly cannot clean out his own litter box. What this means is that you have to be careful to care for your cat.
Relaxed
People who have cats are relaxed, and it’s probably because cats force that trait on them. Did you know that petting a cat, the motion itself, is actually one that relaxes you and makes you feel calm? It helps to lower stress levels and to minimize the kind of overwhelming feelings that you have. Because of that, cats are more likely to cause their owners to relax more often than not.
Caring
It’s impossible to own a cat without having a caring personality. Cats require someone to care for them, and your ability to feed the cat, pet the cat, keep the cat groomed and clean and healthy shows that you are a caring person. Someone without a caring personality will not have a cat. It’s really that simple.
Compassionate
Those with compassion tend to have animals. They know that they can provide animals with a good, loving home. They know that by adopting animals and getting them out of shelters, they are taking other animals off the streets, saving lives and doing the right thing. What this means for you is that you will be able to live a compassionate lifestyle that probably allows you to become even more compassionate since being this way fosters a desire to continue to be this way.
Dedicated
Cat owners are very dedicated. They have these animals that need them and require their attention, and they are dedicated enough to provide that. This is one of the reasons that cat owners are such awesome people. They know what they need to do to make their lives work, and to make sure that they have time for a cat, and they do it. It’s not easy raising an animal, which is why this trait is such a requirement.
Knowledgeable
Being knowledgeable is a perfect trait for a cat owner. Why? Because this means you will be able to understand when your cat needs special attention, such as a trip to the vet. You know what seems normal and what seems abnormal, what calls for additional attention and what requires a bit more notice. It’s common sense and knowledge on this level that makes it possible for you to have an animal that you can call your own.
