This is Why Your Cat Loves Small Spaces So Much

If you own a cat, then probably already know that cats don’t just like small spaces, they love them and are constantly trying to cram their furry little bodies into them. No matter what it is, if it’s small, cats are attracted to the space. Some of their favorite small spaces include, boxes, bags, cubby holes, spaces between and under furniture, and other crazy places we can’t sometimes believe they’d even notice. So why do cats love these small spaces anyways? What is the attraction to them that makes cats so adamant about squeezing themselves into them?

Cats are creatures of security and control. They like to feel that they are ready for anything at any time and ready to pounce at anything that is a threat of an attack on them. This is what tight spaces give them, security, protection, and an easier time monitoring their surroundings. When cats are out in the open, they tend to feel exposed and vulnerable. They want to limit their perceived borders and points of attacks, and according to Science of Us, this is what the borders of a box or bag, even the underside of a couch does for them.

Because boxes and bags give your cat a feeling of security, your cat feels safe and more relaxed, which is why you’ve probably noticed that when they’re in the box, many cats will put their guard down and doze off in it. So, the next time you get ready to throw out an empty box or grocery bag, think about your feline and what that box would mean to him. Let him have the box to hide or relax in and know that the tiny space makes him feel safe.

You can even create a space up high on a counter or other high spot in the house with a box, basket, or small container for him to lay in. Higher elevations add to a cat’s sense of security by giving them a better view to watch for perceived threats they think may be lurking around them.
