Tricks to Get Your Cat To Drink More Water

If you love your cat, and of course you do, then you want to do whatever you can to protect it. Being a pet owner is a serious responsibility. Similar to little children, animals do not always understand how to adequately take care of themselves. In deference to common sense, they often put themselves in danger and do not do enough to keep themselves healthy and fit. Come to think of, many adults fit this category as well! The difference is that data simple lack the foreknowledge to know what to do. As their caretaker, we often need to take it upon ourselves to ensure that they are being looked after properly.

When it comes to water consumption, cats need to drink plenty of it each day just like humans. This is especially important as the weather outside starts to heat up. Remember that cats like to play, and they do not sweat. This can be a potentially lethal situation if you and your cat are not careful. The problem is getting your cat to actually drink more water. It is not as if you just stick there head into a bowl of water and tell them to drink. No, you must get a bit creative. In the end, you need to consider some of the following tricks designed to get your cat to drink more water in the end.

Consider a Wet Food Diet

If you are giving your cat mostly dry food and they still are not drinking much water, then you might be risking dehydration sooner rather than later. However, you can switch to a canned food diet, as this contains moisture that your cat needs. This means that your cat will actually be getting much needed water as it eats every meal. Now, many cats will refuse to eat wet food for whatever reason. If you have such a cat, then you could try to add a bit of water or broth to the dry food that you give your cat for its daily meal. If you are lucky enough to have a cat that does enjoy canned food, consider adding even more water or broth to it in an effort to create a soupy mixture.

Ice Cubes Can Work

You can also add in some ice cubes to your cat’s food. It actually becomes a bit of a treat for the cat, as they seem to enjoy licking it. As they do so, they are getting much needed water. This is a bonus. If your cat is not drinking water out of its bowl, then this might be another way to get him to focus his attention there. Adding an ice cube or two to the water may help the cat by beginning to lick that cube and then continuing on to drink the water. Many cats actually prefer cold water, much like we do, so that is something to consider as well.

Increase the Quantity of Meals

When you do this, you do not want to increase the amount of food being served. Instead, you want to actually decrease the food intake at each meal just a bit and replace it with more frequent meals in exchange. The principle here is that cats get thirsty when they eat. If the cat is eating more often, then they will be encouraged to also drink more water on a more frequent basis.

Be Strategic In Water Bowl Placement

If you only put one water bowl in the house for the cat, it might not be enough. You want to scatter them about so that the cat will always be in the range of some water when the mood hits. You want to make it is easy for your cat to drink water. Don’t make them go out of their way to make it back to the water bowl, as they might simply lose interest before they do. You also want to want to make sure the water bowl is placed in the right location. Remember that cats are extremely clean animals when you think about it. You do not want to place the water bowl right next to the liter station, for example, as this is just not something your cat would appreciate.

Keep the Water Fresh

Just because your cat might not be drinking water as often as you would like does not mean that you should keep the old water in the bowl. Get into the habit of changing the water bowl with regularity. Cats appreciate fresh water. Eventually, they will get into the habit of drinking as much as they should. You can help the situation along by making sure that they always have access to freshwater when it comes right down to it.

Add Some Flavor

You probably have heard that many people today are drinking flavored water. Many people seem to not like the taste of plain water, but adding a bit of flavor provides an incentive to drink more. Cats are the same. Add a bit of flavor to the water and you might notice that their fluid intake increases as a result.
