Ever Wonder Why Your Cat is So Obsessed with Your Keyboard?

Cats are strange creatures. If you’ve ever owned a cat or have been around them enough to see some of their personality traits, then are probably pretty familiar with their quirky personality traits. No one really knows why cats do what they do, and not all cats act the same way, but most of them have some, if not, a lot of traits that make you question how they tick.

Cats are notorious for such behaviors, like, meowing uncontrollably until you feed them, the minute you put the food down, they walk off. You may think they want to be petted and loved on when they hop in your lap. Five minutes into the love fest, they hiss and run off. Their behavior is unpredictable and hard to figure out. Here’s one that really doesn’t make sense for those who work on a computer at home, with a cat.

If you work on a computer and have a cat around, you have probably already noticed that your cat has taken an interest in it. Cats are known for disrupting the work process by sending emails unbeknownst to them, deleting info hitting the wrong button, even causing the computer to tumble, with the cat right along with it. You love your cat close by, but on your computer, is just too close. Not to mention that it sets your cat up for bad behavior if you don’t correct the behavior right away.

Your cat likes to be close to you, and when you’re working, this is where she can be, and she’ll get your attention. However, when your cat hops onto your computer, talking to her and petting her, tells her it’s ok to be close to you here because your positive attitude and talking to her and petting her reinforces that thought.

If you want to detour your cat from jumping on your computer, try placing a box or bed close to the computer that is hers. Never give her positive reinforcement when she gets on the computer, but simply pick her up and put her in her box or bed and begin to give her the positive reinforcement while she’s in there to let her know that’s her spot and where she needs to stay.

Another trick is to make your computer or keyboard an uncomfortable place to lay, or try to make it as inaccessible as possible. The sooner you begin to break the bad habit, the easier it will be.
